Travel Purpose: business

Positive: We enjoyed our 10-days stay at Elias & Maro house. Avdou is a small village, with lovely narrow streets, 4 ancient churches, and lots of cats. There's a typical taverna nearby serving cheap & tasty food, about 5 minutes walk from the house. I would highly recommend a stop at the olive oil shop "saveurs de Crète", also 5 minutes walk from the house. During our stay, there were events and concerts in the village. We couldn't attend all those events, but it was an immersive experience into Cretan life and culture. The house is very well equipped, the kitchen has a dishwasher and all the usual appliances. Our host even left some food for us, so it was very convenient when we arrived. The 2 bedrooms are quite big and all have mosquito nets, which are very useful in summer. Everything was super clean, just like displayed on the photos. We were travelling with our 3 year old son, and our host provided us with a baby bed, linens, a high chair, and even inflatable arm rings for the swimming pool. The garden is the highlight of the house : we enjoyed some oranges, lemons, grapes, plums and even a pomegranate directly from the garden. Of course the swimming pool is great, and the little patio in front of the house is perfect for eating outside in the shade. The rooftop has great views over the mountains and the lake nearby. The closest supermarket which is 'big' enough is in Potamies, 10 minutes away by car. The beach and all the touristic attractions (aquarium, dino park, aqua park, malia site...) are around 20 minutes away by car. This house is a perfect place to stay to visit the area (including a day trip to the Lasithi Plateau), if you want to avoid the crowd of the Heraklion coast, and stay in an authentic and simple village. Our host was always available when we had questions, through whatsapp.

Negative: During the day, there's quite a lot of traffic with quads on the road in the back of the house (leading to the lake), which can be a little noisy. Local pharmacy is closed during week-end, you have to drive 20 min to the coast to get to a pharmacy (or a local clinic where they can speak English) Mosquitoes!
