The castle was later developed by the Beauchamp family and Richard III, and the ruin of the castle still dominates the settlement, set on a high rock above the town overlooking the River Tees and is well worth a visit. The town itself has lovely cobbled streets and back lanes ready to be explored. The surrounding area is home to some fabulous walking country, with the Pennine Way, Teeside Way and the magnificent High Force waterfalls all close to hand.
