Positive: The location alongside the single track railway line between Sarlat and Bergerac and close to the level crossing in the lane where the cottage is located - (hence the name 'La Barriere') - was absolutely delightful. There is a mill stream at the back of the cottage with plenty of water rushing through, although mid summer. For most of the day you could 'hear a pin drop' and the infrequent trains rumbled past at quite a slow speed, because of bends on this part of the route! The host 'Pierre' lives in the adjacent cottage and he met us on arrival - a perfect gentleman, with interests in wine, old cars and motor cycles, so there was always lots to talk about when we met outside during our 2 week stay - and the visit to his workshop was probably one of the highlights of our stay. The garden was very, very large, beautifully kept but not 'manicured' and the pool a welcome retreat when temperatures were sometimes over 40C! A perfect location in the middle of the Dordogne countryside but within 3 minutes drive of Beynac, where there is a general store selling everything you might need and excellent vegetables, a butcher we have known for years selling every type of meat, cold meats pies, quiche, roast chickens etc and next door a baker, open from a very early hour - we think 8.00am - with fresh bread, croissants and all you can imagine in a French Patisserie!

Negative: It would have been nice to have a proper oven - there was an excellent gas four ringed hob and a micro wave. Perhaps a toaster too?

Summary: The perfect, in-expensive, Dordogne holiday retreat - we shall return.
